Portland, Oregon’s Dr. David Clarke, President of the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association (PPDA), learned early in his career that stress is a powerful, hidden cause of many emotional and physical illnesses and disorders. Clarke, a guest on Sharon Kleyne’s internationally syndicated The Power of Water® & Your Health sponsored by Nature's Tears® EyeMist®, naturally pH balanced water technology for acid mantle protection, on VoiceAmerica World Talk Radio & Apple iTunes, told a story of how he referred a patient to a psychiatrist at UCLA who understood the relationship between stress and the body. The patient experienced a full recovery. “That’s when I began to understand the impact of stress on peoples’ lives,” said Clarke.
Clarke, also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology Emeritus and Assistant Director at the Center for Ethics at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) who has diagnosed and treated over 7000 adult and adolescent patients with pain and other physical symptoms linked to stress (PPD), founded his association to help people all over the world diagnose stress problems. “If you can identify the sources of stress in people—which may be childhood stress or it may be stress in your life at the moment, it may be anxiety or depression connected to COVID or not—and when we can identify those issues and bring them into conscious awareness, we can treat them and peoples’ physical symptoms improve,” said Clarke.
Kleyne, an internationally recognized water researcher into evaporation and water vapor of the atmosphere and the body, taught in her Commentary that dealing well with stress actually strengthens one’s immunity protection. “Water is the breath of life,” said Kleyne. “Moisture that’s in the air is life, too. I study the percentages of water in the organs of the body. “Many of the scientists that have come on the show have said that the body is like a battery interacting with the water in the atmosphere.” Kleyne educated listeners about how stress can cause disease and other problems.
Kleyne asked Clarke about addiction, stress and claustrophobia during the pandemic and the fires raging up and down the west coast. “We’re losing businesses to COVID-19 and fire. Water must be a priority.”
Clarke, also a Faculty Associate in the Doctor of Behavioral Health programs at Arizona State University and at the Cummings Graduate Institute and author of They Can’t Find Anything Wrong!: 7 Keys To Understanding, Treating and Healing Stress Illness (https://www.amazon.com/They-Cant-Find-Anything-Wrong/dp/1591810647) said that the pandemic intensifies the stress that already exists in the lives of people. “People of color, sexual minorities and women can feel additional stress, anxiety and depression; stress has gone up significantly in the 18-24, 24-30 groups. There are a lot of pathways to addiction. Addictions are often serving a role of self-treatment for chronic stress resulting from suppressed emotions.”
Kleyne and Clarke cited COVID-19, economic crisis, civil unrest, loss of businesses, fear of the virus, isolation and fire as the multiple stressful issues that everybody must deal with now. “Everyone needs to find a routine,” said Kleyne.
“We have to maintain social distancing but we can also practice physical closeness over the internet by electronic means,” said Clarke. “On-line Happy Hours are an excellent way to stay connected to people. Moving your body, getting exercise, even if you don’t leave your home, you can move your body. Optimize your sleep. You should sleep in a dark environment at a temperature that is not a challenge. Avoid looking at devices within 60 to 90 minutes of going to bed.”
Bio Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science® and founder Kleyne encourage prayers for the firefighters, first responders, law enforcement, scientists, military and thousands that have lost their homes and businesses during the fires and other natural disasters sweeping the nation.
